The shelf-life rule most brands find out about too late

In November 2024 FSSAI issued an advisory to e-commerce food business operators requiring products to carry at least 30% of their shelf life, or 45 days, remaining at the time of delivery to the customer. Which of the two binds depends on the total shelf life, and the platforms enforce their own minimums on top. For a pickle with an eight-month life, that can mean well over two months of your selling window is gone before the stock is any use on a dark store shelf. Brands routinely complete onboarding, ship, and find the stock too old to sell. The paperwork is the easy part; the timing is what catches people out.

Common questions

How long does onboarding take?
Typically four to eight weeks across Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart, depending on document verification and commercial approval. Plan your production around that, because stock made today may not be eligible by the time listings go live.
What do I need before applying?
A registered business with an active GSTIN, an FSSAI licence, GS1 barcodes on your products, and the ability to supply inventory to dark stores. A registered trademark is not strictly required everywhere but materially speeds up approval.
What is the 30% shelf-life rule?
FSSAI advised e-commerce food business operators in November 2024 that products should have at least 30% of shelf life, or 45 days, remaining when they reach the customer. Which threshold applies depends on the product’s total shelf life, and Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart each apply their own minimums on top. Confirm the current number with your platform contact — it is the single biggest constraint on quick commerce for short-life products, and it is why dispatch timing matters as much as paperwork.
